MADRID/SACRAMENTO. Grains are no longer profitable enough for the farmers in Spain. More almonds are to be produced instead.

Almonds to replace grains

According to experts, the grain prices in Spain are at the same level as 40 years ago. This is too low, and the farmers want to devote more attention to growing more profitable products such as almonds or olives. In some regions less cereals will be produced in the future and more almonds.

Market players expect production in Spain to triple over the next few years. The industry has already witnessed an excellent production this season. High demand and the surprisingly small production in California are nevertheless having an impact
