And this season, local output will scratch domestic demand. Lower quantity-high quality kernels will command a high price premium.

SOFIA. The biggest orchards in Bulgaria are organically certified, and their owners have incentives to realize production on foreign markets. Conventional almonds are mainly traded locally because the majority of farms consists of a few hectares.

Almonds: a better quality kernel is expected

Harvest started slow, since the majority of the almonds are still green. Farmers have already begun collecting earlier varieties, although the pace of harvest will quicken during the third and fourth weeks of the month.

In some orchards, farmers already know the quantities this season will be lower because of unexpected frosts earlier in the year – a farmer counted five frosts in a row. Yet, kernels of already collected almonds are fully matured and thus well-formed; as a result, kernels are heavier. However, there is still time before the final almond has been collected from the tree and stored in factories.

If collected quantities are smaller this year, prices will start high and no doubt will be sustained so further in the season. The domestic output is too weak to satisfy local demand, and as a result, the Californian almonds will once again rule the market.

Price expectations

Organic kernels are expected to be sold in the range of 10.50 - 11.00 EUR/kg EXW Bulgaria while their conventional counterparts to hover around 8.60 EUR/kg EXW Bulgaria. By the end of the month, prices will become available.
