MADRID. In the Spanish comarca of Marina Baixa, there have been reports of olive trees infected with olive quick decline syndrome (Xylella fastidiosa), which can also spread to almond trees.

In Marina Baixa, olives and almonds are grown beside citrus fruits. The problem with Xylella fastidiosa is that no pesticide has been developed yet that can be used on trees that are already infected. For this reason, endangered plants and fruit may not be exported from the Balearic Islands to the Spanish mainland. On almond trees, the infection causes leaf scorch disease, which is responsible for the observed increase in almond tree deaths in the last few years.

Why are prices dropping?

In the opinion of the ASAJA CLM (Young Farmers' Association of Castilla-La Mancha), the almond prices in Spain have dropped disproportionately in the last few weeks. In addition to the overall lower availability, various circles consider Spanish almonds to be of superior quality to US almonds. The ASAJA CLM suspects that food speculation is the reason for the unusual price development, and has now submitted an application for investigation with the Spanish food inspection authorities (AICA - Agencia de Información y Control Alimentarios).
