MADRID. Both in Spain and in California, the production prospects for 2017 are very good - much to the displeasure of farmers and traders.

Falling trend

Current estimates are looking at about 1 million mt in California and about 57,000 mt in Spain. However, many market players have got used to the high prices in the last few years and now fear that the price bubble will pop with the beginning of the new season. In the countries of origin, almond prices are at about 7.20 EUR/kg for Largueta almonds, and the level for Marcona almonds is at 7.66 EUR/kg. Farmers and traders dread the thought that prices could drop to levels not witnessed in ten years. According to Llotja de Reus, Marcona almonds were traded for 4.43 EUR/kg at the time, and Largueta almonds for only 3.96 EUR/kg. It still remains to be seen if these fears are justified. However, prices are maintaining their downward trend.
