MADRID/SACRAMENTO. China, the second-most significant importer of Californian almonds (after India), has responded to the US punitive tariff duties. The Spanish market is also reacting.

Does Spain still stand a chance?
The Spanish markets remained partly closed over the Easter weekend, virtually reducing trading activity to zero. Nevertheless, Spanish almond traders have continued to lower their prices this week, by 0.05–0.20 EUR/kg depending on variety and quality. The trade war between China and the US may be a contributing factor to this development. Stocks that can no longer be shipped to China might now be available on the European market, which puts Spanish almond farmers under additional pressure.
