The general spirit is for a prosperous harvest this season. Yet, in a few regions, farmers will suffer losses.

SOFIA. Rains before harvest are crucial for realizing high yield potential. Some farmers from the Southeast region of the country complain of losses because of adverse weather conditions, but the impact has been local.

Almonds: harvest to begin soon

The general feeling is harvest to start in the beginning of September, as depending on weather conditions, the region of growth and the variety of the crop, some farmers will begin collecting almonds during the second half of the month. However, it is not whether harvest will start on time or later in the season because of regional factors or meteorological conditions. It is the national output that matters! Every year, local supply comes short by thousands of metric tons in meeting domestic demand, and as a result, imported almonds have predominantly filled in the gap – mainly imported from the USA.

Worthy the premium

Locally grown almonds have always been an exclusive crop because their supply is small in comparison with local demand. As a result, prices of almonds command a much higher premium than their Californian imported counterparts do. The difference -- sometimes reaching as much as 1.50 – 2.00 EUR/kg -- has never troubled local farmers since they compete on quality and small volumes and not on price and mass production. The majority of locally produced almonds is quickly sold out before New Year’s Eve. As a result, carry-over of locally grown crispy conventional and organic almonds has been literally zero while prices at the beginning of every season are high!
