SACRAMENTO. According to the latest position report of the Almond Board of California, about 20,000 mt of almonds were shipped overseas in May.

Total sales reach last year’s volume

More than 882,000 mt of US almonds have been shipped overseas and to the US since the beginning of the season. Domestic consumption ranges above last year's level and the export volume has declined by around 1%.

Overseas shipments are, however, gradually catching up with the deficit that arose at the beginning of the season. In May 112,562 mt of US almonds were exported, an increase of 22% over the same month last year. Domestic consumption ranges at a similar level as last year.

Traders have to stretch remaining stocks

The Almond Board of California currently estimates the stock at 288,895 mt. As much as 164,392 mt of this amount are said to be already bound in contracts. The remaining 124,503 mt would therefore still be freely available in the market, meaning that supplies range 25% below last year’s supplies around this time. Furthermore, it is reported that the advance sales for the new season amount to 60,417 mt. Of these, 22,948 mt are destined for the US market and 37,469 mt overseas.

Exports in detail

All in all, the overseas shipments may not have reached last year's level yet, it should, however, be noted that the shipments in May have increased considerably. The increase in exports of around 20,000 mt over May 2018 is mainly driven by significantly higher export volumes to China/Hong Kong (+226% to 2,715 mt), India (+81% to 8,176 mt) and Turkey (+96% to 1,307 mt). By contrast, China/Hong Kong and Turkey have performed significantly weaker in the year-on-year-comparison. The announcement of additional import duties, also for US almonds, is likely to have boosted imports to China in the last month.
