Almonds: Total destruction in Spain

MADRID. Producers in the Province of Alicante are deeply concerned. The bacterium xylella fastidiosa has attacked several orchards and there is no cure in sight.

The problem is that the bacteria have evolved into a special form, which is particularly dangerous for almond trees. It is not possible to safe affected trees and to prevent the bacteria from spreading it is necessary to cut down the trees. The young farmers reckon that this would effectively lead to a more or less total deforestation of the orchards in Marina Baja.

Matters will get worse

With the market mainly focussing on the new crop the prices have remains stable. There is, however, one noted exception since the prices for Marcona almonds have declined by about 0.20 EUR/kg. Even if the crop in Spain fails to meet expectations, the expected bumper crop in California is set to add considerable pressure to the market.
