Almonds: A weak year, a quick depletion of stocks is expected

SOFIA. Prices will remain high till quantities are depleted. The country will once again rely on imports to satisfy domestic demand.

BULGARIA. According to a recent USDA report on Tree Nuts: World Markets and Trade, (shelled basis) output of almonds in EU countries for year 2017-18 is forecasted at 103,000 mt, which is 13.19% higher than output 2016-17; domestic consumption is projected to increase to 387,000 mt or up close to 5% from that of the previous year; exports from EU members is to reach 16,000 mt or 3.23% higher; while imports are estimated to come to 300,000 mt, rising from 291,700 mt of last year.

Almonds: weaker yield and lower output support prices

Frosts never go lightly on nuts during their blossoming periods while a sequence of frosts could do the utmost damage. That was the case this year with many of the orchards in the Southeast of the country, realizing a weaker yield and thus collecting smaller quantities of almonds. Yet, according to local farmers, the smaller quantities are better looking – kernels are well-matured than the ones they collected and sold last year.

Since almond orchards are confined to mainly the Southeast of the country, because the nut fares best in climate conditions that are close to the Mediterranean one, almond production is naturally curbed within a specific region. That affects local production in volumes, which stands as one of the major factors for low realized output on an annual basis. Local producers of conventional almonds realize their produce on the domestic market at higher prices since competition is not heated among them while exports of organic kernels happen on an annual basis because quantities collected are relatively substantial.
