Barberries: sharp rise in demand and curious gaps

TEHRAN. Traders in Iran report curious gaps and remarkable discrepancies relating to barberry exports. One curious fact is that although exports were up 31.2% at 38,152 kg in terms of volume in January/February on the same period last year, they slumped by 46.4% to USD 21,582 in terms of value. On clear trend is, however, emerging. Demand is certainly on the rise.

Large discrepancy in exports

The discrepancy between the development of overseas shipments in terms of weight and value is even more pronounced in taking the eleven-month period of 20 March 2020 to 19 February 2021 into account. At 368,830 kg the export volume is 33.5% up on the 276,218 kg shipped in the same period in 2019/2020, but 53.6% down in terms of value. While barberries worth USD 547,937 were shipped in 2019/2020, this value ranged as low as USD 254,305 in 2020/2021.
