Barley: Trade activities slow down

Competitive prices in the Blacks sea region exert pressure on local ones. However, the short-term bearish trend will surely slip into a medium one.

Barley: The future seems to be not that different from the present

SOFIA. According to the Ministry of Agriculture, aggregate production of the recent harvest stands at 620,371 mt while estimated average yield is 4.75 mt/ha. The crop this year is of much higher quality, but prices in the Black sea region are “too competitive” for local selling parties to ship volumes to foreign country at the same rate, as they did at the very beginning of the season.

The turnover of domestic trade is a few metric tons per week and since exports have frozen for the last few weeks, the local market sentiment brings the memories of last year; a year that was characterized by tough regional competition and the lowest exports – 373,796 mt in a row of a few years. Local market players have become quite disillusioned that the future holds better prospects for the crop in storage. By the end of last week, remaining stocks stood at 413,719 mt.

Harvest of Spring barely continues. According to the Ministry of Agriculture, close to 75% of total available land – 4,600 ha for harvest was combined by the end of August 2017. Estimated production stood at 13,022 mt while average yield reached 3.78 mt/ha.
