The North regions recorded higher yields than those of the South. The lower output, however, does not support higher prices yet.

Barley: end of harvesting season

SOFIA. Farmers start to collect barley from the fields the earliest in the season, and as a result, its harvest is finished before that of the other crops. According to the Ministry of Agriculture, by the 13th of this month, farmers harvested 92% of total available acreages for harvest, which this year stood at approximately 130,884 ha.

Although the final estimates of average yields will become concrete by the middle of next month, so far in the season the highest yields have been recorded in the Northwest, reaching as much as 6.3 mt/ha while the lowest in the Southwest – 2.0 mt/ha. This year the estimated aggregate yield on a national level will be higher although production might not break the 600,000 mt ceiling. Last year, output reached 697,787 mt.

Local market developments and trends

Barley is used as a substitute for feed wheat. If prices this season on average are low, the quality of the crop is good and exports remain subdued - as they did the previous season, the crop’s consumption as a substitute could be further encouraged. By the end of last week, exports to EU member states accounted to 30,000 mt.
