CHRUDIM. Sowing is said to have risen sharply for poppy seeds this year, but pests may become an issue as less chemicals are being applied.

Yields are a gamble

Last year's reduced area sown coupled with adverse weather conditions certainly caused production to decline in 2023/2024. Estimates, however, differ considerably. While the Czech Statistical Office issued a production estimate of 18,000 mt, which is still to be rectified, market estimates rather range at 12,000-16,000 mt, of which the higher end appears to come closer to the truth.
