CHRUDIM/BUDAPEST. Hungarian poppy seed traders once again emphasise the difficult market situation and hold back with offers. Czech poppy seed cultivation could also hold a few unpleasant surprises this year.

60% of the sowing discarded

The blue poppy seed market seems to be facing a difficult season. Hungarian traders confirmed once again that their crop is not in good condition and is said to be in worse shape than last year. An estimated 60% of the poppy fields have been discarded. The drought last autumn and winter had severely affected plant growth, while the spring rains had started too late, which is why many fields could not be saved. Market players therefore reckon that Hungarian poppy seed production will be just sufficient for domestic demand. Export
