Blue poppy seeds: farmers in Turkey to switch to white poppy seeds

CHRUDIM/ANKARA. Traders in Turkey report that farmers are considering to switch to white poppy seeds this year. Meanwhile, sowing has been largely completed in the Czech Republic.

Sowing nearly complete

The market is sluggish in the Czech Republic. There are only few enquiries, and sales are basically not taking place. Prices, nevertheless remain firm at EUR 2.72 per kg FCA Czech Republic. Sowing has progresses well and is nearing completion. Although ideal weather conditions are sparking hopes of a good production, information on acreage is stil to be issued. Market players, however, reckon that acreage may be bigger than last year.

Possible decline in production in Turkey

Trading is also largely subdued in Turkey and prices remain unchanged at USD 3.33 per kg FOB. Sowing usually starts later here than in the Czech Republic. Rumour, however, has it that many farmers are contemplating to switch to white poppy seeds this year, as there are no TMO regulations for this variety. Blue poppy seed production may, consequently, decline.
