BUDAPEST/CHRUDIM. Hungarian market players expect a crop of good quality this year, but the prospect of a good crop in the Czech Republic and declining prices could reduce exporters' willingness to sell.

Czech Republic sets the tone

Hungarian poppy seed farmers reportedly sowed about 6,000 ha for this year's crop. According to initial results, the cleaned seeds are estimated at 800-1,000 kg/ha, which would ideally correspond to a production of 4,800-6,000 mt, although the final crop result remains to be seen. So far, however, the quality of the goods has been convincing. The Hungarian market players' desired prices are around EUR 2.00/kg, but whether they can achieve this level now depends above all on further developments in the Czech Republic.
