Blue poppy seeds: new limits for morphine content

CHRUDIM. Market players are surprisingly optimistic about the yield estimates of the Czech poppy seed crop despite the gloomy reports. Nevertheless, a massive drop in production cannot be avoided. Since 1 July 2022, a limit for poppy seeds in food has been in force throughout the EU.

On 1 July 2022, EU Regulation 2021/2142 came into force, which provides for amendments to Regulation (EC) No 1881/2006, with regard to the maximum levels for opium alkaloids in certain foodstuffs. Taking into account recent findings, a maximum level in "whole, ground or milled poppy seeds placed on the market for the final consumer" of 20 mg/kg morphine and for "bakery products containing poppy seeds and/or derived products thereof" of 1.50 mg/kg morphine has been applicable since the beginning of this month.
