Blue poppy seeds: market players make first estimates for 2022

CHRUDIM/ANKARA. The blue poppy seed market remains quiet before the holidays. Market players review the past year and state initial expectations regarding poppy seed cultivation in 2022.

Expectations for sowing in 2022

The Czech Statistical Office confirmed that almost 44,000 ha of poppy seeds were sown in 2021, almost 10% more than in the previous year. However, the originally optimistic yield estimates were reduced to 0.67 mt/ha, a year-on-year decline of 7%. At almost 29,000 mt, the 2021 crop was not only about a third above the 10-year average, but also achieved the best overall result of the past ten years.
