Blue poppy seeds: rise in acreage, but low yields

CHRUDIM/ANKARA. As the poppy seed harvest progresses in the Czech Republic, it is becoming more and more evident that yields range lower than last year. Suppliers in Turkey will have to accept price cuts.

Crop size falls short of expectations

After weather-related delays, harvesting has now started in the Czech Republic. As the fields are rather wet crop damages may occur. With yields ranging around 700 kg/ha, they are certainly well below average of 800 kg/ha. While blue poppy seed production ranged at 24,000 mt last year, the estimates for this year range at 27,000 mt.
