Blue poppy seeds: surprising cultivation forecast

CHRUDIM. The official estimate of the cultivated area by the Czech Statistical Office came as a surprise to the Czech poppy seed industry. However, the fields urgently need rain to stem the crop losses.

Crop decline not confirmed

The Czech Statistical Office recently published the cultivation forecast for the 2023 poppy seed crop. Market players had repeatedly stressed that a decline in cultivation area compared to last year from 26,000 ha to 16,000-18,000 ha was to be expected and have shown themselves to be correspondingly surprised. The official estimate provides for other figures, because according to this, similar to 2022, around 26,000 ha will have been cultivated with poppy seeds again this year.
