CHRUDIM. Anticipated declines in production have boosted demand for blue poppy seeds in the Czech Republic. This has also driven up prices. Although official production estimates still have to be issued, unoffical estimates are circulating in the market.

Low carry-over supplies expected

Traders state that supplies are running low quicker than expected, whereas demand is up for this year's and last year's crop. End-of-season stocks for poppy seeds may even range as low as 1,000 mt. Producers and traders are seizing the opportunity to hold back and drive up prices further.

The Czech Statistical Office should issue crop and sowing estimates in the next few days. Unofficial estimates presently range at 22,000-26,000 ha. If average yields of 0.65 mt/ha are maintained, this year's production would only reach 14,30
