CHRUDIM. The Czech blue poppy seed market is still relatively quiet at the moment. Meanwhile, market players are concerned about farmers' reports on yields.

Uncertainty about yields

The Czech Statistical Office had last estimated this year's poppy seed crop at 20,000 mt, but reports from farmers about low yields are now fuelling concerns among market players. With an acreage of 26,000 ha, the average yield would have to be 0.77 mt/ha to achieve the result forecast by the authorities. If it is confirmed that yields per hectare are significantly lower than previously reckoned, the crop could at worst be halved compared to last year.
