REUS. In issuing new production estimates for this year’s crop the International Nut and Dried Fruit Council (INC) highlights how difficult the current season has been for Brazil nuts. With the current crop sold out attention has shifted to next year’s crop.

Crop sold out

A sharp downturn in production has pushed prices up to record high levels comparable to 2017 as the INC reports. Global in-shell production, in fact, slumped by 37% to 63,060 mt as compared with last season. Total supplies have also declined by 35%, from 104,100 mt in 2024/2025 to 67,260 mt in 2025/2026.

Issue is that the El Niño-related drought witnessed in 2024 gave rise to the worst fire season in nearly twenty years in the Amazon and reduced the size of the crop and kernels. Most production facilities were forced to close four months early and the 2025 crop is sold out with some customers delisting Brazil nuts from their production lines.

Situation to improve in 2026

Hope is that the 2026 crop will bring relief. While the INC reports that some believe that there is the possibility that the trees will overcompensate and bear more fruit with the potential of driving up the crop size to the record seen in 2018, Chelmer Foods is rather reckoning with an average crop and states that it is still too early for assessments. If the crop turns out to be normal prices should start to come down for shipments as of April.
