Bulgarian wheat: small quantities left for trade

Prices have reached a plateau. With the upcoming harvest a few months away, farmers check conditions of arable plots.

 Wheat: Prices seem to have reached a plateau

SOFIA. Since the beginning of April, prices of milling and feed wheat have been steadily falling, reaching what seems to be a plateau. Approximately, since the beginning of the second week of the month, prices of milling wheat and feed wheat have been somewhat stable at around 0.161 EUR/kg CPT domestic port and 0.156 EUR/kg CPT domestic port, respectively.

Harvest approximately two months away

According to the Ministry of Agriculture, by the 13th of April, to-be harvested arable land for the upcoming season stood at 1,096,468 ha, which is about 2,7% less than that of the previous year. So far fallen through plots of arable land stood at the miniscule figure of 65 ha, although sudden cold weather, accompanied by unexpected snowfall in some parts of the country, surprised farmers. Yet, it is too early to make concrete forecasts!

The table below shows a snapshot of domestic production 2016-17 and up to date domestic and foreign trade developments.

By the 14.04.2017, reserves reached at 759,762 mt while available quantities for trade stood at 272,762 mt. Currently, feed wheat from the upcoming harvest is sold for 0.143 EUR/kg CPT domestic port.

At the same time, trade data via sea routes shows the following export figures: for the period 04.07.2016-16.04.2017, via Varna seaport were exported 1,571,612 mt of wheat, which is 8,6% higher than exported quantities of season 2015-16. Varna seaport is a major trade route for exporting the crop to the rest of the world.
