DODOMA/NEW DELHI. To be able to grant their farmers a higher minimum price, the Tanzanian government bought up the entire local cashew crop last year. A large part of the cashews is still unsold in the warehouses and market participants are concerned about the quality of the raw material.

The Tanzanian government is accused of the stored raw cashews rotting in the warehouses because no suitable buyers have yet been found. Government spokespersons then stated that the raw cashews were in good condition and would only lose some of their size and weight. Nevertheless, experts insist that the quality of the product be checked in order to calculate possible financial losses for the state.

The search for partners and investors at nationally and internationally has so far been only slightly successful and the domestic processing capacities are far from sufficient to process
