HANOI. Vietnam's cashew export turnover surpassed an important mark in 2024, and the future looks promising. Both a larger export volume and a higher average export price have contributed to this success.

4-billion-dollar mark broken for the first time

Vietnam's General Department of Customs announced that Vietnam, already the world's top cashew exporter, has broken its record again in 2024. By mid-December, the export value had already reached USD 4.2 billion – the first time in history that exports have broken the USD 4 billion mark. The Vietnam Cashew Association (Vinacas) describes this as ‘a new step forward for the cashew industry’. The USD 3 billion mark was exceeded for the first time in 2017, and between the years 2017 and 2023, annual sales continuously fluctuated between USD 3 and 4 billion, but never exceeded this important mark. Export sales in 2023 totalled around USD 3.64 billion.

More than 700,000 mt

The most important reason for the record sales in 2024 is undoubtedly the significantly higher export volume. The country shipped a total of 696,000 mt of cashews overseas between the beginning of the year and 15 December, compared to just 644,000 mt in the previous year. According to current estimates, total exports in 2024 are likely to have exceeded 700,000 mt. Higher export prices have also contributed to the new record. They totalled USD 5,873/mt in the first ten months of the year, 3% higher than in the same period of the previous year.

As Vinacas reports, exports to traditional markets grew well in 2024, often in the double-digit range. Specifically, the cashew exports to the USA rose by 33%, to China by 14%, to the Netherlands by 14%, to the United Arab Emirates by 75% and to Germany by 24% in the January-October period of 2024.
