Chickpeas: US market in turmoil

NEW DELHI/WASHINGTON, D.C. The Indian chickpea market has experienced a boost and price increases are not likely to be long in coming. In the USA, government subsidies have sent the market into turmoil.

Traders seize the moment

Although export prices have fallen again slightly compared to last week, the Indian chickpea market is showing the first signs of recovery. Many traders see the current prices as a profitable buying opportunity, because despite normal sowing and an estimated production of 3.0 to 3.1 million mt, prices were initially put under pressure by old stocks. Now that an upward trend is in sight, traders are taking the precaution of stocking up on the cheaper goods.
