Chickpeas: significantly lower yields in Canada

NEW DELHI/OTTAWA. Estimates for the chickpea crop in Maharashtra, India, have been revised downwards significantly. In Canada, too, lower yields are likely to result in a significantly smaller crop than last year.

Prices largely stable

Prices for Kabuli chickpeas from Maharashtra initially fell at the start of last week as demand declined. At the same time, traders stuck to their prices and refused to accept lower selling prices. By the weekend, prices had recovered significantly after sellers stood firm in the face of tight supply. Rising imports from Mexico temporarily dampened the trend somewhat, but overall, international prices remained stable to firm.
