Harvest has been belated because of rain last week. However, favorable weather conditions during the previous few days allowed some farmers to begin harvesting the crop.

Barley is losing ground to other crops

SOFIA. Since harvest 2014-15, having an output of about 852,230 mt, barley’s cultivation has surely been losing ground to other more profitable and traditional crops. Output from harvest 2016-17 stood at 697,787 mt, which was close to that of the previous year.

What to expect from the upcoming harvest?

Combines have already entered the fields in some regions, but the fields of today -- when estimated by the Ministry of Agriculture on a national level -- stand by 33,546 ha less than they did during the previous season. In the following days, barley’s harvest will be gaining momentum on a mass scale and, if weather permits it, will finish soon while that of rapeseed will start. Yet, will the lower output support the price of the upcoming crop and keep it as high as that of harvest 2016-17 has been so far the season?

Prices of the new crop are expected to start lower

Farmers expect prices to be lower at the beginning of harvest and thus try to postpone selling in bulk for later in the season. Anyhow, those who have bank and/or trade obligations will roll out their crops on the market as soon as harvest ends.
