BRUSSELS/TEHRAN. As recent statistics show dates are enjoying a high popularity in Europe. Iran has apparently imposed a temporary export ban that is devoid of economic sense.

High popularity in Europe

EU imports show how much the popularity of dates is growing. In 2024, imports reached a record 156,427 mt worth EUR 382 million (USD 409 million). This is 17% up in terms of volume and 16% up in terms of value on the 133,465 mt worth EUR 329 million (USD 352 million) imported in 2023. Tunisia held a market share of 43% in 2024 as imports rose by 17% to 66,431 mt as compared with 2023.
