TEHRAN. Five factors — unilateral price setting for dates, the sudden halt of international trade due to war, a sharp decline in domestic market demand, the imposition of an export ban, and a severe shortage of packaging materials on the eve of the harvest season — have placed Iran’s date industry in a worrying situation as local exporters report.

Imposed prices are a disaster

Government-imposed pricing for Mazafati dates in the Iranian domestic market, without regard to supply and demand mechanisms, has caused some farmers to refrain from supplying their products. At the same time, Iranian Mazafati dates face serious competition in both domestic and international markets in terms of price, packaging, and market appeal. Improving quality and packaging can enhance the competitive advantage of this product — not administrative price controls.
