MANILA. For desiccated coconuts and coconut oil the Iran war will have a lasting impact. Higher production and freight costs will drive up prices. Quotations in Europe are, however, remarkably firm.

Reestablishment takes time

Oil prices haves eased after a volatile start to the week as the USA are seeking a possible extensions of the two-week ceasefire to allow enough time for negotiations over the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz and Iran's nuclear enrichment programme as Trading Economics and other news sites report. Yet, even if the US blockade is lifted it would take months before shipping routes would be up an running smoothly again. As T.M. Duché outlines it will take time for insurance and freigth contracts to be renegotiationed and for the more than 150 ships stranded off the strait to be cleared. Officials will also need to inspect, repair and replace damaged infrastructure in the Gulf states.

Prices set to rise

Consequently, the effects will continue to be felt in South-East Asia, particularly in the Philippines, for some time to come. The region heavily depends on oil transported through the strait. Furthermore, several biodiesel programmes rely on stable regional fuel supplies and functioning refinery markets. Rising prices for diesel and heating oil will increase operating costs for copra mills, drying facilities and exporters in the Philippines. Added to this are the rising freight costs for bulk goods.

At the end of March, the export prices for desiccated coconuts from the Philippines stabilised. On the local trading markets in Manila, however, there was a slight rise. By contrast, the European spot market witnessed slight downturns in some cases. Philippine fine high-fat desiccated coconuts are trading firm. Indonesian fine high-fat desiccated coconuts have fallen by EUR 50/mt since March.
