MANILA. Price trends for various coconut products in the Philippines are currently very mixed. Rising freight rates and the effects of El Niño are causing further uncertainty.

Mixed trends

The Philippine coconut market continues to present a mixed picture: whilst international prices for coconut oil are falling, domestic commodity prices are rising. Export quotations for desiccated coconuts remained unchanged for the 20th consecutive week. At the same time, domestic prices for desiccated coconuts in Manila rose, suggesting that local processing costs continue to be supported, even though export prices have not yet been adjusted upwards; this is reported by experts at T.M. Duché.

On the international market, the downward trend in coconut oil prices continued. Coconut oil is currently trading at lower prices than palm kernel oil. Buyers remain cautious and, despite a somewhat firmer trend in other vegetable oils, are unwilling to accept higher prices for lauric oils.

Stable domestic prices and rising freight costs

Copra prices in the Philippines continued to rise. In Quezon, as well as in other major growing regions, both sellers’ asking prices and buyers’ bids increased. The highest regional prices were recorded in Northern Mindanao.

Container freight rates rose again, particularly on the Asia-Europe and trans-Pacific routes. According to Drewry, this upward trend is likely to continue in the coming weeks. This is increasing cost pressures for importers of coconut oil and desiccated coconuts from Asia to Europe.

Overall, the coconut oil market remains driven by demand, whilst copra and desiccated coconuts are trending firmer on the domestic market. At the same time, uncertainties regarding long-term price trends and availability due to El Niño persist, according to T.M. Duché.
