No improvments in sight
Desiccated coconuts are nearly sold out in the Philippines. Most shipments are only available as of November as JCP International reports. A few earlier shipments are possible but prices are extortionate. According to T.M. Duché export prices are retaining the high level of USD 1.45-1.85/lb held for several weeks supported by continuing high demand in the US and Europe.
Improvements of the supply situation are not in sight this year as production is epxected to decline by 20% in the Philippines. This will rather boost the market. Exports have also witnessed a concerning downturn with most recent estimates suggesting a 72% slump in volume and 26% decline in value as compared with last year. Contrary to this, coconut oil has retained a strong position. CIF Rotterdam quotations range at USD 2,645-2,800/mt. Demand has, however, cooled as some buyers have temporarily withdrawn from the market.
Rumours dismissed in Indonesia
As JCP International highlights yields are poor in Indensia. Exports of fresh coconuts to China and Thailand to meet the rising demand for coconut milk are further compounding the situation. While the government was allegedly toying with the idea of an export ban for fresh coconuts, such plans have now been officially dismissed as rumours. Exports will continue but it is clear that domestic production needs to be stepped up.
Households struggle to obtain coconuts in Sri Lanka
Sir Lanka is confronted with extremely limited supplies as JCP International further reports. Suppliers cannot even meet domestic demand. This has prompted prices to surge to the highest level in all origins.
