Desiccated coconuts: prices remarkably stable

MANILA. Despite ongoing shortages and strong demand, prices on the market for Philippine desiccated coconuts remain largely stable. The damage caused by this year's typhoons is noticeable, but the supply chain remains intact.

Demand remains high

Export prices for Philippine desiccated coconuts have now been stable for the fifth week in a row, according to the experts at T.M. Duché, and stand at USD 1.47-1.90/lb FOB. Despite continued strong demand, prices for shipments to the US and Europe remain unchanged. Meanwhile, there have been slight price increases on the domestic market, which are also due to strong demand. Domestic prices for crude coconut oil are volatile, while export prices range from USD 2,480 to USD 2,740/mt CIF Rotterdam, depending on quality and supplier. Prices for copra, however, have fallen slightly.

Damage caused by typhoons

Super Typhoon Ragasa, which hit the Philippines on 22 September, caused damage to coconut palms in the north of the archipelago. As similar problems had already occurred at the beginning of the year, this has exacerbated production difficulties. However, the earthquake that shook the Philippine island of Mindanao on 10 September did not cause any damage to factories or palm trees, so there was no disruption to the supply chain. The worst was prevented by the absence of the tsunami that was initially feared.

Freight rates rise slightly

Supply remains limited, both in the Philippines and on the international market, so price declines are unlikely for the time being. Price reductions in freight rates are also taking a break. According to T.M. Duché, after 17 consecutive declines, the Drewry World Container Index rose by 2% to USD 1,687 for a 40' FCL.
