MANILA. Sourcing desiccated coconuts is becoming increasingly difficult, while demand remains high. This is stabilising prices. The situation is different on the coconut oil market.

Calm market situation with a firm trend

The market for desiccated coconuts is stable overall and prices are holding steady, with higher-quality products in particular showing strong resilience, according to the experts at T.M. Duché. A slight upward trend has also been observed on the domestic market recently. The market analysts describe the price development as “sticky” as supply and demand are currently well balanced.

Scarce supply supports price levels

Demand for desiccated coconuts remains constant, while procurement is becoming increasingly challenging. Unpredictable weather conditions, high and strictly controlled quality requirements – especially for the European market – and long procurement cycles limit flexibility on the supply side. In addition, Indonesia is gaining importance as an alternative source, but is facing rising raw material costs. An ageing tree population structure, growing demand for raw coconuts (including from China) and political intervention to secure domestic supply are causing ongoing uncertainty here, according to T.M. Duché.

Downward trend in coconut oil continues

In contrast, the international coconut oil market remains under pressure, particularly in Europe. What is striking here is the significantly smaller price difference to palm kernel oil. This development indicates a wait-and-see attitude on the part of buyers, as coconut oil has lost some of its relative appeal. The lower premium compared to alternative vegetable oils is currently limiting the upside potential and suggests that market development in the coconut oil segment will remain subdued.
