QUÈBEC/MADISON. Adverse weather conditions and pests posed quite a challenge for cranberries in Québec last year. Expectations for this year's crop are much better and early arrivals are highly encouraging.

Canada hopes for above-average yields

As Fruit d'Or reports via Chelmer Foods the farmers in Canada are confident that this year's crop will show yields that are way above average, also because 2024 is the more productive year in the biannual crop cycle. Although the 2022 bumper crop will not be reached, the warm and wet summer has helped the fruits to grow. They are bigger than last year and displaying a good colour. Yet, the situation is totally different for organic cranberries as pests have impacted quality and yields. All the measures adopted by farmers so far to protect the plants have been largely futile.

Despite having witnessed harsh winter conditions without protection, the blooming and pollination periods have been good in the US state of Wisconsin. Only some crop damages have been reported here so far and the farmers are reckoning with a satisfying production. Although yields will exceed the average of the past few years, they will not exceed last year's results. Prospects are also encouraging in Massachusetts.

Supply and demand are well balanced. Production has been able to keep up with rising demand in the past few years. This year's production should also cover consumer and industrial demand.

EU imports still higher than last year

At 26,481 mt EU imports are 11% up on last year. While imports from the US have surged by 34% and are also 8% up from Canada, shipments from Chile have slumped by 36%. The Netherlands presently are the main EU importing country and shipments to here have risen by 16% to 19,090 mt since last year. Contrary to this, shipments to Germany declined by 13% to 2,000 mt and to Poland by 27% to 1,760 mt.
