Dried cranberries: global production up by 10.2%

QUÉBEC/MADISON. According to data from the International Nut and Dried Fruit Council, global cranberry production in 2024/2025 was higher than originally expected. EU countries also increased their imports by 4.5% last year.

EU imports increased by 4.5% in 2024

In 2024, a total of 36,216 mt of dried cranberries worth EUR 131.708 million were imported into the EU, meaning that the import volume increased by 4.5% compared to the previous year, while the import value fell by 4.0%. At 14,040 mt, shipments from Canada remained roughly at last year's level, while EU countries increased imports from the USA by 26.4% to 18,088 mt. Imports from Chile, however, fell by 37.5% to 3,776 mt in 2024.

Cranberry imports were also largely stable in the first few months of the new calendar year. Between 1 January 1 6 April 2025, a total of 10,566 mt of dried cranberries worth EUR 40.813 million were imported into the EU – while the import volume was almost identical to the same period last year, the import value increased by 6.9%.  Deliveries from the USA and Chile fell by 6.0% to 4,740 mt and 12.4% to 1,218 mt respectively during this period. Imports from Canada, meanwhile, increased by 12.6% to 4,579 mt. The main importers in the EU are the Netherlands (+1.0% to 7,010 mt), Germany (+9.4% to 918 mt) and Poland (-0.8% to 738 mt).

Production up by 10.2%

According to the latest data from the International Nut and Dried Fruit Council, global production of dried cranberries in the 2024/2025 season totalled 202,551 mt, which would be an increase of 10.2% compared to the previous season. Together with the carry-over stocks from 2023/2024, 215,956 mt would therefore be available in the current season. This puts global cranberry production slightly above the volume of 200,140 mt originally estimated in May 2024.

Not only did US cranberry production increase by 8.0% to 142,321 mt last year, crops in Canada (+17.5% to 49,560 mt) and Chile (+7.9% to 10,670 mt) also recorded significant year-on-year growth.

On the European spot market, dried cranberries, cut of Canadian origin were recently offered at a level of EUR 3.98/kg FCA Poland.
