AYDIN. High temperatures spell good news for figs in Aydin as conditions are ideal for high-quality fruits. Turkey's dried fig exports are also doing well.

Happy growers

As many as 7 million fig trees are grown on 37,000 ha in Aydin and provide one of the most important income sources for people living here. High temperatures in August largely provide the flavour of the fruits and cause them to ripen. The heatwave with temperatures exceeding 40C (104F) witnessed in recent days is certainly providing ideal conditions for the new crop. As humidity is lower in hot periods quality will receive an additional boost. The first fresh figs are already being traded with prices ranging at TRY 50/kg.
