Dried figs: expensive consequences for exporters

AYDIN. The Turkish government's new measures in the fight against increased aflatoxin levels in dried fig exports are resulting in enormous costs for the exporters concerned. The growers' plans to withhold goods in order to sell them at a higher price have not worked out so far either.

Stricter measures with expensive consequences

Since the end of last year, increased levels of aflatoxin and ochratoxin have been detected in dried fig shipments to the EU, leading to rejections at the respective national borders. The Turkish Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry has now responded with appropriate measures, which have been in place since 1 January 2025. Stricter controls are required and aflatoxin and ochratoxin will also be taken into account in analyses in the Turkish domestic market in future, as well as all types of chemicals that could be used in
