Dried figs: farmers fight pests without chemicals

AYDIN. In order not to put the fertilisation of fig trees at risk, Turkish farmers cannot use conventional pesticides to combat the black fig fly. Exporters are trying to ensure that the problems encountered this season do not occur as frequently in the new year.

Combating the black fig fly

In Aydin, fig farmers are busy tending to their plantations. The local directorate of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry has recently pointed out possible damage caused by the black fig fly and recommended that appropriate countermeasures be taken. The insect only attacks fig trees. Fruit infested by the larvae ripen prematurely, can develop a slightly sweet flavour and swell before falling from the trees. This can significantly reduce yields.
