ESTAHBAN. Iran’s fresh fig production is around 10% up on last season. More than 90% of production is marketed as dried figs. Estahban in Fars Province accounts for 50% of the country’s production. Although the figs produced here are mainly shipped to China, there certainly would be more potential if growers switch more to organic production and traders refrain from illegal smuggling activities.

Illegal smuggling ruins reputation

Estahban’s fresh fig production ranged at 20,000 mt in 2020. The dried figs produced in the region are green and mainly exported to China, Vietnam and countries in the Persian Gulf. Although China is in fact one of the best markets for Iran’s dried figs, illegal smuggling to avoid high customs charges have nearly ruined the country's reputation. Traders are urged to use legal channels and to obtain Chinese customs clearance. Suppliers, in addition, need to work more closely together to achieve higher prices for Esthaban
