Dried figs: production costs drive up prices

AYDIN. Only two weeks to go before the first offers for the new dried fig crop will be issued and prices should range high. Issue are the sharp rises in production costs.

Farmers delighted with heat

Temperatures have climbed to 40C (104F) in Aydin, which is ideal for the crop. Assessments have nearly been completed and things look good. Harvesting will start in low altitudes next week and around one week later in high altitudes, the first prices will be issued within the next two weeks. Trouble is that the sharp rise in production costs will leave growers with little option but to demand high prices. Tariş may even issue a price of TRY 100/kg for A grade dried figs, which is twice as high as last year.
