AYDIN. Not only has production increased in Turkey but also the prices. They are noticeably higher than last year.

Traders refuse to buy

The prices for dried figs started the new season on a very high level. Dried figs, Lerida, no 4 were for instance offered at 5,600 USD/mt FOB Izmir and may even rise to 6,000 USD/mt FOB Izmir. Rumour has it that prices may increase by 30-35% as compared to last season. Traders, however, doubt this as such high prices would be unreasonable. They prefer to wait for new crop arrivals.

Late start to the export season

Production estimates currently range at 78,000 mt. Last year Turkey only produced as little as 72,000 mt of dried figs. It is reckoned that the supplies of large fruits will be limited, but the quality is supposed to be good.

Turkey is currently not exporting to Europe as attention has now focused on the new crop. The low temperatures at night have delayed drying by a couple of days and the export season will officially start on 11 October.
