AYDIN. Turkish dried fig farmers have miscalculated this season. Trading activity remains weak and exports are significantly below last year’s levels.

Miscalculation leads to losses

In the Turkish province of Aydin, sunny weather with temperatures of 21-31°C is expected this week. Conditions therefore remain favourable for the development of the fig trees.

Trade, however, remains sluggish. Exporters consider the risk too high that remaining stocks may contain elevated levels of aflatoxin and ochratoxin, which is why farmers are left with their raw materials despite the recent price cuts. This is particularly painful for those producers who sorted out and held back their large dried fruits at the start
