Domestically, trade activity is slow as usual. By the start of the new harvest, remaining stocks will end-up much higher than last year’s carry-over.

Weather temperatures affect not only the start of harvest; they also affect the different development stages of a crop. The higher the temperatures, the quicker the acceleration of the crop to its full stage of ripeness.

What to expect from the upcoming harvest?

SOFIA. According to the Agricultural Ministry, in the start of June 2017, to-be-harvested plots of barley stood at 129,768 ha, which is about 20.4% less than what farmers had planted for the previous season. Fallen through plots were registered to account for the meager figure of 85 ha. Generally, farmers have shifted their focus to the cultivation of other agricultural products such as rapeseed and wheat where the margins are higher.

Foreign demand has an effect on cultivation strategies

Because of regional competition, exports have relatively lagged during season 2016-17, in comparison with those of season 2015-16. According to the Ministry of Agriculture, going into June 2017, exports stood close to 373,800 mt. A further case in point, by the 04.06.2017, registered exports via Varna sea port accounted for 17,379 mt, which is about 88.3% lower than those registered by that time last year.

On the price front

In recent weeks, the average purchasing price of barley, harvest 2016-17, has been fluctuating in the range of 0.135 EUR/kg - 0.141 EUR/kg EXW Bulgaria. In July 2016, the average purchasing price of the crop was estimated at 0.124 EUR/kg EXW Bulgaria. With much higher accumulated stocks at the end of the current season, prices for upcoming crop are expected to remain on the ebb side.
