ASTANA/OTTAWA. The Kazakh Grain Union estimates that global flaxseed production will decline by about 26% in 2023. Just recently, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada had also significantly reduced its estimates for this season's Canadian flaxseed crop once again.

Massive decline in cultivation

In 2022, global flaxseed production reached its highest result to date by far - around 3.64 million mt of flaxseed were harvested in that year. Due to various circumstances, there was then a massive collapse in cultivation areas and yields in the current calendar year. Unfavourable weather conditions coupled with rising production costs caused flaxseed cultivation to fall behind and at the same time lower yields were achieved. Global flaxseed production declined by 26% to 2.695 million mt.
