ASTANA/MOSCOW. A few weeks ago, it was reported that Russia was planning to introduce a 10% export tariff on flaxseed. A decision is expected in a few weeks. With the new crop now available, EU imports are picking up speed.

Possible decision in October

According to Mikhail Maltsev, executive director of the Oil and Fat Union of Russia, the Russian government could approve the introduction of the tariffs within the next two to three weeks. The aim is to reduce raw material exports in order to promote processing in the domestic market instead. Originally, an export duty of 30% was planned, similar to that on rapeseed. However, this was abandoned because domestic processing capacities would be far from sufficient to absorb the expected increase in availability on the Russian market.
