DALIAN. Shrinking stocks in the Chinese market have caused the price of goji berries to rise in recent weeks. Demand is high, but the new crop is still a long way off.

Prices often only available on request

Most of the world's goji berry production comes from China, which makes many buyers of the superfood dependent on the conditions in this one country. Unfavourable weather conditions, which have a negative impact on yields, and disruptions of all kinds in the supply chain are then quickly felt in the international goji berry market.

This season, supply on the Chinese market is comparatively tight and there is real competition among buyers who still want to secure positions, the experts from Dalian East Dawn Nuts said in their latest report. Prices are moving steadily upwards, with many exporters only offering in response to specific enquiries. At the beginning of March, conventional goji berries, 380 pcs./100g were quoted at a level of USD 5,870/mt CFR Hamburg, while prices for organic goji berries were at USD 7,630/mt CFR.

Running out of goods?

This year's crop will not be available on the market for around six months and there is growing concern among market players that Chinese stocks will not be sufficient to meet demand. Goji berries are becoming increasingly popular with consumers due to their reputed health-promoting properties and further price increases are to be expected in the coming months until the new crop will be available.
