Grains and oilseeds: China takes market by surprise

BRUSSELS. China is using wheat as a supplement for corn. Estimates point towards a supply glut for corn. China has surprised the market with unexpected soybean purchases. China’s president XI Jinping will also meet Canada’s prime minister Mark Carney to discus the tariffs on canola.

China uses wheat as supplement

As official data shows Australia and Argentina exported a combined volume of 620,000 mt of wheat to China in December, the highest on record since April 2024. Australia supplied 460,000 mt and Argentina 160,000 mt. Issue is that China requires large volumes as the bumper corn crop is largely impacted by mycotoxins and needs to be supplemented by wheat for producing animal feed. Traders reckon that Australia and Argentina will have shipped up to 5-6 million mt of wheat to China by mid-2026. At USD 219/mt FOB Argentinian wheat is trading
